The measure has been completed – Aleksandr Ovetshkin is banned from entering the country!
Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze states on X that Russian NHL star Aleksandr Ovechkin has been banned from entering Latvia. The country’s borders remain closed to Ovechkin for the time being.
The decision is based on Ovechkin’s appearance in a video by Vladimir Putin for the United Russia party’s campaign. Ovechkin poses in the video as part of a support group gathered around Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
ESPN reporter Robert Klemko mentioned on X that he interviewed Ovechkin regarding the matter. According to Klemko, Ovechkin initially answered questions for a while before he abruptly ended the interview and left the scene.
Klemko explained to Ovechkin that his appearance in the Russian campaign video could be interpreted as supporting the war. Ovechkin disagreed with this.
– I don’t think it supports the war. I think it just supports what is happening in Russia. I want peace and love for everyone. It’s not about being American, Russian, or Ukrainian. I have many Ukrainian friends. I hope everything is well and over soon, Ovechkin said.
Ovechkin stated that he supports Russia regardless. Klemko then asked if he would support genocide if Russia were responsible for it. To this, Ovechkin sighed.
– Oh. I would say hopefully things don’t get to that point, Ovechkin said and left the scene.
Ovechkin, 41, signed a one-year extension with the Washington Capitals this summer, marking his 22nd season with the team.
