MTV: The Joker’s goalkeeper sidelined – now the team reacts quickly
Jokerit is strengthening its goaltending department. The sports director of the Helsinki team, Olli-Pekka Yrjänheikki confirmed to MTV Sports that the team needs to respond to the injury of goaltender Olle Eriksson Eki.
Eriksson Ek suffered a concussion during the JYP match on Thursday and will be sidelined for some time. The Swedish goaltender was injured in the third period in a situation where he had come in for Veini Vehviläinen. Vehviläinen had to return to the net in the final moments of the game.
Jokerit’s goaltending has been one of the team’s biggest problems at the start of the season. Both Eriksson Ek and Vehviläinen have had a save percentage of around 80, and on average, over four goals have been scored against them per game.
Yrjänheikki admits that the current level is not sufficient.
– We are aware that if you look at the save percentages, they are not sufficient for a winning level. Based on that analysis, we will move towards certain solutions.
When Yrjänheikki was asked whether Jokerit has had to keep their nets busy due to the injury, the answer was clear.
– Because of that injury, we have to respond. We will come out of it at some point, says Jokerit’s sports boss.
Jokerit has lost all four of its early-season games and has collected one point.
Jokerit will face Tappara in Helsinki on Saturday.
