Jokerit reacts quickly to its goaltending situation. The club has made a short-term contract with 36-year-old Tomi Karhunen.

Karhunen’s contract lasts until September 26 and covers four games. The background is the injury of Olle Eriksson Eki in Thursday’s JYP match.

– Late last night, I received a message asking if I was available. That’s when things started to develop; we quickly reached an agreement, and here we are. I was immediately excited, and this is certainly a good solution for both: I get to start the season, and the goal is to be able to help Jokerit, Karhunen says.

Karhunen has played 238 regular season games in the Liiga and has three Finnish championships. Additionally, he has played in the SHL, Switzerland, and Germany’s DEL.

Jokerit’s sports director Olli-Pekka Yrjänheikki says the club is looking for a short-term contract primarily to buy time for a longer-term solution.

– Tomi has experience in similar situations where he has been brought in to fill the goaltending position on short notice, Yrjänheikki says.

– Karhunen’s short-term contract gives us time to make decisions that are beneficial in the long run, he states.

At the same time, Jokerit acquired Lukas Selin from Kiekko-Vantaa on a one-game loan. Both are available against Tappara.
