Does Jokerit acquire a new goalkeeper? This is how Tomek Valtonen responds.
One of the problems for Jokerit at the start of the season has been goaltending. The red-yellow team played their first home game in the Liiga in over 12 years on Thursday, but goaltending overshadowed the historic evening.
Jokerit’s head coach Tomek Valtonen shared his thoughts on the team’s goaltending situation with the media after the match.
The starting goaltender on Thursday, Veini Vehviläinen, was replaced after two periods when the 29-year-old’s former youth club JYP scored four goals on 14 shots.
– We win as a team and lose as a team. Before the third period, we made the decision to change the goaltender, Valtonen commented.
Also skating between the posts was the disappointing Olle Eriksson Ek, who started the season poorly. However, the Swedish goalie got injured in the third period, and Vehviläinen eventually returned to the net.
The injury causes further problems for goaltending management.
– We’ll see what the health situation is; we’ll be wiser tomorrow, Valtonen stated.

“Let’s see what happens”
Last season, Jokerit responded to the weak goaltending at the start of the season by bringing in Vehviläinen. If Eriksson Ek is seriously injured, it seems logical that the same task may lie ahead.
Valtonen did not want to comment further on the possibility of acquiring a new goaltender.
– We need to analyze this carefully now. We can’t make hasty decisions. Let’s see what happens.
Jokerit continues its matches in the Liiga the day after tomorrow, Saturday, when they host the reigning Finnish champion Tappara. The match starts at Veikkaus Areena at 5:00 PM.
