Tampa Bay Lightning reacts quickly to the injuries of its forwards.
The team announced on Wednesday that it has signed a professional tryout contract, or PTO, with Luke Glendening. The 37-year-old forward is a familiar face for the Lightning, as he played for the team during the 2023–25 seasons.
Glendening’s acquisition came at a crucial time for Tampa, as the team announced on Wednesday that Yanni Gourde will be out until December and Dominic James since the start of the season.
Glendening has played a total of 934 NHL regular season games. He has scored 85 goals and recorded 175 points in those games.
In Tampa, he accumulated 158 games over two seasons, with stats of 14+4. In the playoffs, Glendening appeared ten times and scored two points.
Last season, the center played 70 games with the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers. He scored two goals and provided seven assists.
Now Glendening will compete for a spot with last season’s superstar from Tappara, Benjamin Rautiainen.
Rautiainen, who moved from Tappara to North America, has started Lightning’s young players’ training camp strongly. In two games, he has recorded stats of 1+1.
Glendening’s acquisition did not receive praise from Tampa Bay fans
On X, some fans wondered why the spots opened by injuries are not given to younger players.
– What the heck, a bunch of young diamonds that any other team would elevate to the roster are being overlooked to bring back the old guys. This year, the Bolts will be lucky if they even make the playoffs with a wild card. The team is not getting younger, faster, or more athletic – now it’s all about rocking chair games, user JBalboniSr stated bluntly.
The same user highlighted young players Conor Geekie, Sam O’Reilly, and Dylan Duke.
– Tampa is the only team in the NHL whose policy is that players are too young to be promoted. Montreal is full of 20–23-year-olds, and they beat us. Buffalo is young and big, the Panthers can afford it. It’s not that the Bolts can’t find talent – they send it to Syracuse until the players are 25.
BoltsJolts also would have liked to see an opportunity for young players.
– I’m not a fan of this. It’s clear that a spot will open for him when Gourde is out until mid-season. However, it should be a competition for those young players who are ready or close to being ready to make the jump.
