Petri Matikainen on the frightening injury of the JYP star: “He was taken to the hospital on a stretcher”
The Jokerit played their first home game of the season in the Liiga on Tuesday. JYP was a tough visitor in the match and took the points with a score of 4-2.
In the first period of the match, a frightening injury was witnessed. JYP’s Juuso Puustinen lost his balance and crashed headfirst into the boards. He was treated for a while on the ice, after which he was helped off the rink.
In an interview with SuomiKiekko, JYP’s head coach Petri Matikainen shed light on Puustinen’s condition.
– He went to the hospital on a stretcher. It looked like there wouldn’t be any fractures or anything. It was a dangerous situation, and it seems he will stay here overnight for examinations, Matikainen says.
– It was a really serious situation. The medical staff handled it excellently. They deserve praise.
As for the match itself, Matikainen was satisfied.
– It was indeed a tough game. It was very physical, just like a playoff game. We knew the home team would come hard, and they did.
The Jokerit got off to a strong start in the match. Only 14 seconds into the first period, Maxime Fortier managed to slide the puck into the JYP net. According to Matikainen, JYP did not seem to feel the pressure of the match, but was perhaps too relaxed.
Before the start of the season, Matikainen named Jokerit as one of the potential championship favorites. The experienced coach continues to praise the team and their play.
– An excellent, quality team that will be tough in the Liiga. Very good players and they play well. There is experience and skill.
