Big decision: NHL superstar was shelved before the season
The Winnipeg Jets have made a bold decision regarding their star goalie Connor Hellebuyck. The NHL team announced early Thursday morning, Finnish time, that the 33-year-old goaltender did not report to the team’s training camp and has been shelved.
The background is a long-standing dispute between Hellebuyck and the Jets. Last month, Hellebuyck, through his agent, requested a trade from Winnipeg.
– I have tried to handle the situation calmly and respectfully and give the team time to explore their options. As training camp approached, I felt it was important to publicly reaffirm my request. My stance has not changed, and I believe that moving forward is the best solution for me and my family, the American goalie said earlier.
GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is set to comment on the decision to the media on Thursday.
Hellebuyck has four years remaining on his contract. The contract has a cap hit of $8.5 million per season.
Last season, Hellebuyck played 57 regular-season games. He recorded 23 wins, a save percentage of 89.5, and an average of 2.86 goals against.
Hellebuyck has played his entire 11-season NHL career with Winnipeg. In the regular season, he has accumulated 625 games with a save percentage of 91.6.
Hellebuyck has won the Vezina Trophy three times and the William M. Jennings Trophy twice. In 2025, he was also awarded the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player.
General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff will address the media at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 17th, at hockey for all centre.
