The Mestis season 2024-25 starts on September 12. For the first time in years, the Mestis champion team has the opportunity to fight for a place in the Liiga through the qualification series. In the 2023-24 season, the championship was won by IPK.

Mestis broadcasting
In Finland, the broadcasting rights for Mestis are owned by MTV Oy. The current contract is valid until spring 2027. In the 2024-25 season, all Mestis matches will be shown live on the MTV Katsomo streaming service and MTV’s pay channels.
You can access Mestis matches by purchasing the MTV Katsomo+ Sports package, which costs €36.95 per month (with ads). For Telia subscription customers, the discounted price is €31.95/month.
Through Telia, you can also order the MTV Katsomo+ Sports package without entertainment, which does not include ads. This way, you can pay just for sports at a lower price of €34.53/month.
Mestis information package
What?
Mestis is the second highest level of hockey in Finland. Mestis was established in 2000, replacing the 1st division of ice hockey. In the 2023-24 season, there will be a quadruple round-robin league with 13 teams (48 matches).
Ten teams will advance to the Mestis playoffs, with the top six teams from the regular season advancing directly to the quarterfinals. The teams placed 7th to 10th will play in the first round of the playoffs in matchups of 7 vs. 10 and 8 vs. 9 in a best-of-three format (two wins). The bottom two teams of the regular season will continue to relegation playoffs.
No team can be promoted to Liiga from Mestis, as Liiga is currently a closed league.
Where and who?
Mestis teams can be found from a total of 13 different cities. The reigning champion is Kiekko-Espoo, which aims for Liiga in the coming years. Jokerit, which received a Mestis license for the 2023-24 season, has the same goal.
There are 13 teams in Mestis. All teams will play a total of 48 regular season matches.
The largest arenas in Mestis are located in Helsinki, Tampere, and Espoo. Jokerit, however, only plays some of its home matches at the Helsinki Ice Hall, which has the largest capacity in the league (8200). The smallest ice hall is home to JoKP, which will have to be evacuated for the entire season. The Outokumpu ice hall can only accommodate about 700 spectators.

You can be relegated to Suomi-sarja from Mestis. The two weakest teams in the regular season will enter relegation playoffs.
