Patrik Laine’s criticism of his former team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, in December 2024 garnered a lot of attention at the time. The Finnish player questioned the team’s culture and desire to win.

Now, over a year later, Blue Jackets head coach Rick Bowness’s recent comments support Laine’s views. Columbus ended their season with a 1–2 loss to the Washington Capitals. The team embarrassingly missed the playoffs, losing 10 of their last 13 games.

After the game, Bowness gave direct feedback to his team:

– You just have to look at the stats: three hits, 23 turnovers. I don’t know if I’ll be back here, but if I do, I’m changing this culture. These guys don’t care. Losing doesn’t bother them. How can they go out there and play like that? It should have been done a month ago, Bowness stated in the press conference.

– That’s why we’re not in the playoffs. You have to hate losing. I don’t care if it’s a meaningless game, Bowness referred to the match between Columbus and Washington, where it was already clear that Columbus’s season would end with the regular season.

Laine had previously commented on the team’s situation directly:

– They are a bit too content and comfortable with their situation. It didn’t really suit me anymore. But here (in Montreal) it doesn’t matter if we win or lose, we always try our best, the Finnish forward told The Athletic.

Based on the recent comments, Columbus’s problems have not disappeared, so perhaps Laine was ultimately right.
