The Athletic: Matias Maccelli becoming a trade asset in the NHL
Finnish forward Matias Maccelli had a challenging NHL season behind him. He recorded only 8+10=18 points in 55 games in Utah. Additionally, Maccelli was in his team’s lineup for just three games after the 4 Nations break.
24-year-old Maccelli played his first NHL games in the 2021-22 season. He then had seasons with 49 and 57 points, but last season his scoring pace slowed down.
The Athletic has highlighted NHL players likely to be traded this summer in an article. Maccelli’s name is on that list.
– Unfortunately, Maccelli’s point production plummeted. He is a very clever and skillful playmaker, but at 180 centimeters, he is inconsistent defensively and not a strong forechecker, writes The Athletic’s reporter Harman Dayal.
– It’s hard to imagine an optimal role for him in Utah. Both parties would likely benefit from a fresh start.
Maccelli’s contract covers the next season. His contract’s annual value is 3.425 million dollars.
– He could be a high-potential acquisition for a team looking for a playmaking winger in the middle lines, Dayal assesses.
