One of the biggest trade sagas of the NHL fall came to an end on Friday when the Winnipeg Jets traded their star goalie Connor Hellebuyck, 33, to the New Jersey Devils.

In return, Winnipeg received forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goalie Nico Daws, last summer’s first overall pick Alexander Command, as well as second-round picks in 2029 and seventh-round picks in 2027.

Hellebuyck’s departure from Winnipeg had been in the air for a long time. The American goalie requested a trade last summer and did not participate in the Jets’ training camp in September.

The team reacted to the situation by placing their star goalie on unpaid leave. The leave was supposed to end just on Friday, when a resolution regarding Hellebuyck’s future was finally reached.

Hellebuyck is one of the most successful goalies in the NHL in recent years. He has won the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the league’s best goalie, three times in his career. In the spring of 2025, he was also awarded the Hart Trophy as the most valuable player in the entire NHL.

Hellebuyck’s current contract runs through the summer of 2031 and has an annual cap hit of $8.5 million.

The contract also includes a no-trade clause, so the goalie’s approval was a condition for the move to New Jersey.
