Dallas Stars’ Finnish star Mikko Rantanen is facing a tough situation in the NHL on Sunday. The New York Islanders players still have a bone to pick regarding last season’s events.

The Elmonters reports that the Islanders’ camp has not forgotten Rantanen’s hit last November that ended defenseman Aleksandr Romanov’s season.

Islanders forward Casey Cizikas made quite a bold statement before the teams’ new encounter.

– We are focusing on winning and playing our game. If there’s a chance to put him down, it will be done, Cizikas told The Elmonters.

Rantanen checked Romanov from behind into the boards in November 2025. The Finn was sent to the showers for the incident but later avoided further suspension.

Romanov’s fate was significantly harsher. The defenseman’s shoulder required surgery, and his season ended after just 15 games.

Romanov is not participating in Sunday’s game due to other injuries. Based on Cizikas’ comments, Rantanen can still expect a physical and possibly heated reunion.

There is also other tension in the game, as Islanders head coach Pete DeBoer returns to Dallas for the first time since his firing last summer.
