The Swedish forward of TPS, Lukas Wernblom, has been suspended for six matches due to a biting incident that occurred during Saturday’s match against Lukko. The league announced the decision on Sunday evening.

Wernblom bit Lukko’s defender Peetro Seppälä through his glove during a battle in front of the goal. The bite caused a bleeding wound on Seppälä’s finger.

The situation arose when Seppälä tried to free himself from Wernblom’s grip by pushing his head with his gloved hand.

The actual biting was not visible on the video recordings, but the linesman noticed the incident. The disciplinary committee also considered Seppälä’s reaction and the resulting wound as reliable evidence.

– On these grounds, the Delegation considers it fully established that Wernblom bit Seppälä, the disciplinary decision states.

This case is exceptional in the history of the league’s disciplinary actions. A similar biting incident has not been handled before.

– Biting is a rare and unacceptable act in ice hockey, and its reprehensibility is significant, the disciplinary delegation stated.

The six-match penalty took into account the seriousness of the act, its occurrence during a stoppage in play, and the injury caused to Seppälä.
