TPS’s star forward Lukas Wernblom, 26, has taken a new turn in the biting incident, as the Swede denies intentionally biting Lukko’s defender Peetro Seppälä.

Wernblom received a six-game suspension from the league, but according to the forward himself, the true course of events has remained obscured in the public eye.

Wernblom shares his perspective on the case in an interview with Turun Sanomat. The star forward presents a completely different view of the situation.

– I do not agree with the description of the situation. I was only trying to get my head out of the hold because it hurt so much. I had no intention of harming him, and I don’t know what happened to his fingers when I tried to pull my head away, Wernblom claims.

According to the league’s disciplinary delegation, Wernblom bit Seppälä’s finger during a struggle between the players. The bite resulted in a bleeding wound near Seppälä’s nail.

The disciplinary decision states that Wernblom first had Seppälä’s head in a headlock. Seppälä tried to free himself from the hold by pushing Wernblom’s head with his glove, causing his fingers to end up on the Swedish forward’s face.

However, according to the Swedish forward, the situation did not unfold exactly as described in the league’s disciplinary ruling.

– First, his fingers pressed against my eye, after which he pushed his fingers into my mouth and started pulling me by my cheek and lip. The grip was so strong that I got wounds inside my mouth, Wernblom recounts.

The league’s disciplinary decision acknowledges that the biting is not visible in the match video recordings. However, the linesman reported having observed the biting, and the disciplinary delegation deemed the evidence sufficient for a six-game suspension.

Wernblom mentions that he later discussed the incident with Seppälä. According to him, there are no disagreements left between the players.

– I apologize if I harmed him in any way, as that was certainly not my intention, Wernblom says.

Wernblom has been one of the league’s biggest stars this season. The Swedish star has recorded 17 points in 17 games with a score of 7+10=17.
