The Russian defenseman Aleksandr Nikishinin has reached a resolution in his long-standing contract dispute with the Carolina Hurricanes. The NHL team announced on Sunday that they have signed the 25-year-old defenseman to a one-year contract worth three million dollars.

This decision marks a significant turnaround, as Nikishinin’s salary demands were previously of a different magnitude.

Sportsnet reporter Elliotte Friedman reported before the season began that Nikishinin was seeking a five-year contract that would have earned him nine million dollars per season.

Thus, the final annual salary is only a third of the previously reported demand.

There was already a lot of commotion around Nikishinin before the season started. The defenseman skipped the Carolina training camp and reportedly requested a trade from the team after last season.

Now, however, the Russian continues in a familiar team.

– We are happy that Aleksandr is returning to our team. This has been a long process, but we look forward to him coming back to our locker room ready to help the team, just as he did during last season’s championship year, Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky commented in the team’s announcement.

Nikishin quickly rose among the NHL’s most effective rookie defensemen last season. He scored 11 goals and accumulated a total of 33 points, placing him second in the rookie defensemen scoring race.

In the spring, Nikishin was part of the team that won the Stanley Cup with Carolina. He played 17 playoff games and recorded one assist.

The Russian defenseman’s contract situation will come to the forefront again next summer when he becomes a restricted free agent.
