The advanced hockey statistics provider DataDrivenHockey conducted a comparison of NHL players who have scored at least 150 goals in the last ten seasons.

In the results, Laine emerged as the most efficient finisher in the entire NHL when comparing the goals scored by players to the scoring chances they created.

The statistic examined how much players exceeded their expected goals, meaning how many more goals they scored compared to what could have been expected based on the quality of their situations.

Laine clearly stood out

The Finn scored 224 NHL goals during the observation period, even though his expected goals were 153.7. This difference means that Laine finished a remarkable 45.7 percent more goals than the statistical model would have predicted.

This figure was the best in the comparison.

DataDrivenHockey assessed that the high result indicates “either the player’s exceptional ability in goal-scoring situations or more frequent access to favorable scoring opportunities.”

Behind Laine were many of the NHL’s biggest names. Leon Draisaitl ranked second with a figure of 33.8 percent. Following him were Nikita Kucherov (31.3) and Jason Robertson (31.1).

Only these three players, along with Laine, exceeded the 30 percent threshold.

Several well-known NHL goal scorers also fell behind the Finn. Auston Matthews ranked 13th in the comparison and Alex Ovechkin 21st.

Laine is still looking for a new team

Laine’s statistical result is particularly interesting because his last season was severely cut short. The forward, who represented the Montreal Canadiens, played only five games due to injury.

Currently, Laine is still searching for a new NHL contract. He became a free agent on July 1, but no new contract has been established yet.

Laine has already returned to the rink. He played in a summer league in Florida this week and immediately succeeded in scoring.
