Is Chicago bringing back its team legend? The NHL team is planning an amazing tribute.
NHL legend Jonathan Toews, 38, announced in June that he would be ending his extensive playing career. His long-time team, the Chicago Blackhawks, plans to make a one-day contract with Toews so that he can officially retire as a Blackhawk.
– We would really like to have Jonathan back. We did so with Marian Hossa. Nothing is set in stone yet, but I believe it’s likely that we will act accordingly, Chicago GM Kyle Davidson said at a press conference according to NHL’s website.
What would make the situation particularly special is that another team legend, Patrick Kane, just returned to Chicago.
– It would be really great to see him here again, especially with Kane. There is no concrete plan yet. But just as I have said before regarding Patrick, Jonathan is forever a Blackhawk because of everything he has given to this city, Davidson noted.
Toews returned to the NHL last season after being out for two seasons due to health issues. He represented the Winnipeg Jets last season, recording 29 points in 82 games with 11 goals and 18 assists.
Before his two-season hiatus, Toews had played his entire NHL career in Chicago. The team drafted him third overall in 2006. Toews represented Chicago from 2007 to 2023 and served as the team’s captain starting from his second NHL season.
Toews won three Stanley Cups in Chicago in 2010, 2013, and 2015. He played a total of 1,149 regular-season games in the NHL (383+529=912) and 137 playoff games (45+74=119).
