Patrik Laine’s wait for a new NHL team continues. The Finnish player’s name has been mentioned in several trade rumors over the summer, and now new information about his situation has emerged.
According to reporter Stefan Rosner, who closely follows the New York Islanders, the team had discussions with Laine’s camp after the free agency market opened. However, the negotiations did not lead to an actual NHL contract.
According to Rosner, the Islanders were only willing to offer Laine a maximum of a PTO contract, which is a professional tryout agreement. Thus, the Finnish player did not receive the NHL contract he was seeking from the team.
Although the Islanders currently do not seem to be progressing with Laine, the situation has not been completely ruled out. Rosner estimates that the parties may still return to negotiations if Laine does not find the desired contract elsewhere.
The Islanders have a need for reinforcement, especially for power play. The team’s power play was the second weakest in the NHL last season and ranked 30th overall in the league. However, the team already has many players in the offense, which complicates the acquisition of a new forward.
Laine, who was drafted second overall in the 2015 NHL draft, has played in the NHL for the Winnipeg Jets, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Montreal Canadiens. He has accumulated 537 regular season games in his career.
