The New York Rangers’ goaltending situation darkened in an instant when superstar Igor Shesterkin was injured in Friday’s game against Washington. The Russian goalie was unable to put weight on his right leg and was helped off the ice.

Rangers captain J.T. Miller described the incident to NHL.com.

– Terrible. He is the backbone of our team, so this is really tough. It is still early to say what happened to him, but it was shocking for all of us when he had to leave the game, Miller said.

The Rangers’ concern is compounded by the absence of Joonas Korpisalo. The Finnish goalie is also suffering from a lower body injury, and his rehabilitation is being monitored week by week.

The goaltending duties will temporarily fall to 24-year-old Dylan Garand, who has only five NHL games under his belt.

The severity of Shesterkin’s injury was not yet known to head coach Mike Sullivan after the game. The star goalie had started the season strong: three wins in four games with a save percentage of 92.6.

The Rangers lost to the Capitals 1–3.
