Patrik Laine has not yet signed a new NHL contract, although several teams have shown at least some level of interest in the forward according to various insider sources.

NHL insider reporter Pierre LeBrun mentions the Calgary Flames and Detroit Red Wings as potential suitors in the TSN Insider Trading program.

LeBrun claims that Laine’s representatives have received several inquiries from those teams. However, the interest has not yet led to a contract offer.

– Calgary has discussed the possibility of signing Laine internally, but they want to see first what their young players can do, LeBrun reports.

Both Calgary and Detroit are currently in quite a turmoil. The Flames are undergoing a full rebuild, while the Red Wings’ camp is in disarray due to a recent GM change and the desire of two stars, captain Dylan Larkin and defenseman Simon Edvinsson, to leave the team.

LeBrun wonders, in any case, why Laine is still without a team. In his opinion, a contract heavily based on performance bonuses could offer teams a risk-free solution.

– Laine could sign a contract that is heavily based on performance bonuses. With a monthly salary of around $150,000, some team could get a player who has broken the 20-goal mark in the NHL seven times, LeBrun reminded of Laine’s past scoring pace.

Laine is currently training in Florida.
