The points race in the league is an incomprehensible situation
The league’s early season has been filled with plenty of drama. Who would have believed back in August that a couple of months later, HIFK, Jokerit, and KooKoo would be occupying the relegation spots?
The points race in the league is also interesting. It looks very much like the domestic stars of the league have been overshadowed by foreign reinforcements during the early season.
Among the top ten in the points race, there are only two Finns: Sami Päivärinta from HPK and Daniel Mäkiaho from HIFK. Päivärinta is in seventh place and Mäkiaho is right behind him in eighth. The rest of the top names are from Canada, the Czech Republic, Austria, Sweden, the United States, or Denmark.
The most effective player of the early season has been Luke Henman from Ilves. The Canadian forward has scored 5+9=14 points in ten games for the team.
In terms of goalkeepers, the situation for Finns is slightly better. The best save percentages belong to Mantas Armaliks from Ilves and Patrik Bartosak from Pelicans, but seven Finnish names are among the top ten most reliable goalkeepers.
