The city of Turku has announced that it will withdraw from hosting the 2028 Youth World Championships if the Russian national team participates in the tournament.

The city of Turku states in its press release that Russia’s participation would not align with the city’s values. The city hopes that the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF and the Finnish government will find a solution to prevent Russia’s participation.

– We act according to our values even when it means giving up significant events and the opportunities they provide. As long as Russia is waging an aggressive war in Ukraine, we cannot accept the Russian national team playing in Turku, Mayor Piia Elo states.

Turku is still ready to host the World Championships if Russia does not participate in the tournament. However, if Russia’s absence cannot be ensured, Turku will give up its hosting rights.

The Under-20 World Championships are scheduled to be held at the turn of the year 2027–2028 in Turku and Tampere.
