The return of Russia to the ice hockey World Championships has sparked strong reactions in Finland. The Finnish Ice Hockey Association’s statement published on social media has been met with demands for a boycott of the World Championships.

The international sports arbitration court CAS decided on Friday that Russian ice hockey teams should be allowed to participate in international tournaments.

The decision concerns the men’s, women’s, and under-20 World Championships in 2027, as well as the under-18 boys’ and girls’ World tournaments.

The Finnish Ice Hockey Association stated in its position that it respects the legal decision-making system of international sports, even though the content of the CAS decision is completely contrary to what the Association hoped for.

The statement published by the Finnish Ice Hockey Association on X has garnered critical comments. Several writers demand that Finland should withdraw from the World Championships if Russia participates in the tournaments.

– “The Finnish Ice Hockey Association respects the legal decision-making system of international sports.” So the stance hasn’t changed, but there is still no backbone to stand behind it and go to the championships. Disgusting. A united boycott front is the only right solution.

– Let’s stay out of the championships where they are involved.

– Try to lead that association by actually leading and simply putting the championships on boycott. There is no need to ask for the feelings of players or officials due to the war in Ukraine.

– Boycott is the only option!
