In a long time, the name of former Finnish NHL forward Petri Skriko made headlines in North America when Florida Panthers’ Brady Tkachuk joined the rare club in NHL history on Friday night Finnish time.

Tkachuk scored three goals and led Florida to a 3–2 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks. This was the American forward’s second consecutive clean hat trick. In a clean hat trick, a player scores three goals in a row without anyone else from either team scoring in between.

The rarity of the achievement is highlighted by the fact that previously only Cy Denneny in 1923 and Skriko in 1986 had managed the same in the NHL. Thus, the Finnish legend’s feat had a new counterpart nearly 40 years later.

Skriko achieved his historic performance while playing for Vancouver in November 1986. First, the Finn punished the Calgary Flames with three goals on November 18. Three days later, he outdid himself and scored four goals against the New York Rangers.

This was the wildest stretch of Skriko’s career. The Finnish forward scored three hat tricks in eight days and netted a total of 12 goals in five games.

Now Skriko’s former team had to watch closely as Tkachuk rose alongside the Finn.

Vancouver was leading the game 2–0 still in the third period. However, Tkachuk initiated Florida’s comeback with his goal when there were 8:49 left on the clock.

The equalizer came just 12.8 seconds before the final buzzer. In overtime, Tkachuk completed his hat trick and secured the victory for the Panthers at 2:23.

In his previous game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Tkachuk had needed only eight minutes and three seconds for his three consecutive goals.

The forward, who moved from the Ottawa Senators to Florida in the summer, has turned his sluggish start to the season into a scoring frenzy. After eight games, Tkachuk has recorded 6+2=8 points.
