The big sponsor had enough – out of the World Championships!
The Swedish company AJ Produkter has decided to boycott the 2027 Ice Hockey World Championships due to Russia’s participation. The company, which has sponsored the World Championships since 1989, plans to remove its logo from the tournament, even though its sponsorship agreement has already been made.
The matter is reported by the Swedish TV4.
AJ Produkter’s CEO Enock Johansson states that the decision was made unanimously among the company’s owners, board, and management.
– It is very unfortunate to have to make such a decision, but we are unanimous that it is the right solution, Johansson tells TV4.
In practice, the decision means that the company’s logos will be removed from, among other things, the referees’ uniforms and advertising spaces in the arenas. Johansson justifies the decision by referencing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
– We sponsor sports and the values it represents. Russia’s participation after the invasion of Ukraine does not feel right. We can express our stance by removing our brand from visibility. We consider it important, Johansson explains.
