Russia is returning to the ice hockey World Championships. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has decided that Russia can immediately return to international ice hockey activities.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) announced the decision on Friday. The IIHF expressed its disappointment with the ruling in a statement. The federation believes that its previous decisions to exclude Russia from competitions were necessary to ensure the safety of participants and the integrity of the tournaments.

IIHF states that it will respect CAS’s jurisdiction and comply with the decision. At the same time, the federation emphasizes that the safety concerns behind the ruling have not been resolved.

The CAS decision affects the 2027 men’s, women’s, and under-20 World Championships, as well as the under-18 girls’ and boys’ World tournaments.

According to IIHF, Russia’s return poses significant practical challenges, as preparations for these tournaments are already well underway.

Changes in participating countries will require a reassessment of tournament formats, match schedules, travel arrangements, accommodations, and security measures.

The International Ice Hockey Federation will urgently take action and will provide further information on practical arrangements later.
