The Carolina Hurricanes’ strong start to the NHL season has taken an unfortunate turn, as the championship team’s captain Jordan Staal will be out on long-term sick leave.

A torn pectoral muscle will keep the experienced center out of the rink for an estimated 1–2 months.

Head coach Rod Brind’Amour informed the media about the injury on Tuesday. Staal sustained the injury during the weekend’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The 38-year-old Staal played a key role in Carolina’s championship run last spring. The veteran center’s contribution was recognized with the Conn Smythe Trophy awarded to the most valuable player in the playoffs, in addition to the Stanley Cup victory.

This season, Staal has yet to open his scoring account, although the captain’s value to the team is not measured solely by points.

Staal often takes on the responsibility of shutting down the opponent’s most dangerous forwards and also handles important face-offs. He is also a respected leader in the locker room, whose experience and presence mean a lot to the team.

In terms of results, the Hurricanes have started the season in excellent form. They have won their last five games and have climbed to the top of the NHL standings.
