The Finnish Ice Hockey Association intends to do everything possible to prevent Russia’s return to the ice hockey World Championships.

The board of the Ice Hockey Association decided in its meeting on Monday evening that all possible means will be kept available to keep Russia out of the World Championship tournaments. Finland’s position is unequivocal: The Lions will not play against Russia as long as the country’s offensive war in Ukraine continues.

The Finnish Ice Hockey Association has been in contact with several IIHF member countries over the weekend. The aim is to form as broad a united front as possible against Russia’s participation.

– We are currently gathering as many countries as possible into a united front to tell the IIHF that none of us will play against Russia in this situation. This weighs significantly more than just announcing it on our part, says the chairman of the Ice Hockey Association Heikki Hietanen in the association’s statement.

– Our line is that we will not play against Russia as long as the offensive war against Ukraine continues, Hietanen states.

On Monday, November 2, a two-day meeting of the IIHF board began, with the main topic being the Russia issue. Hietanen, representing Finland on the IIHF board, states that he has clearly presented Finland’s position in the international discussion.

– It is the responsibility of the IIHF to communicate about the meeting once it has concluded. I have naturally made Finland’s position clear on the matter, and we will continue this work tomorrow, Hietanen says.

The Finnish Ice Hockey Association promises to provide more information on the situation as potential follow-up actions and solutions become clearer.
