Contract extension negotiations ongoing – NHL team wants to sign Finnish defenseman: “We have a need…”
Finnish defenseman Henri Jokiharju, 26, is on the verge of becoming an unrestricted free agent as his NHL contract is expiring. The NHL free agency market opens on July 1st.
Jokiharju’s past season concluded with the Boston Bruins, where he moved from the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline. The Bruins are keen on retaining the Finnish defenseman for the future. GM Don Sweeney mentioned that negotiations for a contract extension with Jokiharju are ongoing.
“We have a need on the right side (defense), there’s no doubt about it,” Sweeney stated.
Last season, Jokiharju recorded 3 goals and 3 assists in 42 games with the Sabres and 4 assists in 18 games with the Bruins. He earned $3.1 million from the past season.
Originally, Jokiharju was the 29th overall pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2017 NHL Draft. He has played a total of 407 NHL games for the Blackhawks, Sabres, and Bruins, accumulating 19 goals and 78 assists for 97 points.
