Pori Ässät can breathe a sigh of relief, as the team’s number one goalkeeper Jan Bednar will continue with the club next season. The expiration of the NHL trade deadline sealed the situation, and the Czech goalkeeper will not be moving to North America at least for now.

Satakunnan Kansa reports that 23-year-old Bednar’s goal has been to advance his career to the NHL, and a departure was considered possible right up until the last moment. However, the transfer window that closed on Monday, June 15, confirmed that a potential transfer would not happen in a way that would leave Ässät with only a small compensation.

The decision is significant for Ässät, as losing the number one goalkeeper in the middle of summer would have forced the club to react quickly in the transfer market, where options are already largely committed to other teams.

Last season, Bednar was one of the most utilized goalkeepers in the league, having played 44 games in the regular season with a save percentage of 90.72. In the playoffs, he took responsibility in goal for Ässät from start to finish, playing all 12 games and saving pucks with a 91.62 percent success rate.
