Leevi Teissala‘s transfer to the British top league raised a lot of astonishment among Finnish hockey fans on Friday. Just a few years ago, the 25-year-old forward was expected to become the next star player of the Liiga, but now his career continues with the Sheffield Steelers in the EIHL league.

However, the transfer was preceded by a conditional contract that, if realized, could have offered the forward a spot in the top lines of the Liiga next season.

According to MTV Sports, Teissala had a conditional contract with Ketterä, which was aiming for a Liiga spot next season. However, the Imatra-based club was unable to meet the criteria required by the Liiga, resulting in them continuing in the Mestis league next season as well.

With the news, Teissala’s planned transfer also fell through.

The forward himself does not see moving to Britain as a setback for his career. On the contrary, he believes he will have a better opportunity there to elevate his career back on the rise.

– A good season in terms of results, and hopefully we can win a trophy too. From there, aiming for Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria. I believe that succeeding there gives me a better chance for those places than from the Liiga with limited minutes, Teissala explained his decision to MTV Sports.

The past season was difficult for the TPS product. Teissala started the season with his youth club, where he played 40 games with stats of 3+15=18. However, his responsibility decreased throughout the season, and at the trade deadline, the forward changed scenery to Södertälje in Sweden’s Allsvenskan.

However, the anticipated fresh start in Sweden did not take off. Teissala collected modest stats of 2+1 in 23 games.

Now the former super prospect is seeking a new rise in his career from Britain. A successful season in Sheffield could open doors back to tougher leagues in Europe.
