SaiPa’s star acquisition for the upcoming season Petr Fridrich, 26, scored impressive numbers in the Czech Republic’s top league last season, where the winger netted 21 goals in 52 regular-season games while playing for Olomouc.

Fridrich reveals in an interview with Hokej.cz that he received attractive offers for the next season from his home country’s top league as well. Nevertheless, he is heading to Finland and Lappeenranta.

– I admit that some offers from Czech clubs were really interesting. Moreover, most offered me long-term cooperation.

– The move to SaiPa is definitely a huge challenge for me. Not just from a hockey perspective, but also in terms of life. Playing abroad has always been my goal. I see it from the perspective that there might not be another similar offer in the future, Fridrich explains his move to Liiga.

Fridrich is aware that SaiPa is expecting him to be their new goal scorer and to fill the shoes of Maxime Fortier, who is moving to Jokerit. Fortier scored 29 goals in 58 regular-season games.

– They consider me to be one of the leaders of the offense and expect goals from me. That also attracts me. Additionally, while clubs in the Czech league negotiate contracts very early, the foreign market is different in this regard. Foreign players are often sought after at the last minute. So when the offer came from Finland, there was no reason to wait. It’s nice to have certainty, Fridrich emphasizes.

The forward has also risen to the Czech national team in recent years at the EHT. SaiPa might have quite a gem on their hands for the upcoming season.
