The Athletic: Artturi Lehkosella has the ingredients for a big payday
Artturi Lehkosella has high stakes in the NHL this season. The Athletic highlighted the Finnish forward as a player for the Colorado Avalanche who now has the most to prove.
Lehkos’ contract is up next summer, and a successful season could open the door to a significant pay raise. The prospects are promising both in terms of early-season performance and his line mates.
– It made sense for the Avs to have Lehkos wait his turn in contract negotiations – Cale Makar took precedence – but the end result now is that he is playing on an expiring contract. With three goals in the first four games and a regular spot alongside Nathan MacKinnon, Lehkos is in a good position to cash in, The Athletic praises.
After four games, Lehkos has stats of 3+1=4. Maintaining a point-per-game pace throughout an 84-game regular season would mean a total of 84 points. Of course, only a small part of the long season has been played so far.
The growth of the salary cap could also accelerate the Finnish player’s payday. Last summer’s free agency saw significant deals for players whose single-season point totals have never reached seventy.
Lehkos is currently playing the final season of his five-year, $22.5 million contract. The average annual salary of the contract is $4.5 million.
Last season, Lehkos finished with 21+27=48 points in 70 regular-season games. His most productive regular season to date was in the 2022–23 season, when he accumulated 51 points.
