Mats Sundin: top position from the NHL!
The Toronto Maple Leafs are making significant changes to their management. The team announced on Sunday that they have hired John Chayka as the new GM. At the same time, the Maple Leafs confirmed that the team’s long-time star player Mats Sundin is returning to the organization as a hockey operations advisor.
Chayka will be seen in an NHL role again for the first time in years. He previously led the Arizona Coyotes but left the team amid controversy in 2020 just before the playoffs. A year later, the NHL imposed a suspension on him for allegedly negotiating other job opportunities while serving as the Coyotes’ GM. Arizona ultimately decided to terminate his contract.
Toronto vacated the GM position in the spring when the team fired Brad Treliving during the final weeks of the regular season.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Sundin will take on the new role full-time and move back to Toronto with his family.
MLSE CEO Keith Pelley believes the new appointments will strengthen the entire organization.
– This is an important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs. John and Mats bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. We want to build a team that can compete for the championship, Pelley said in a statement.
The team will hold a press conference in Toronto on Monday, where more details about Chayka’s and Sundin’s new roles will be announced.
