Florida Panthers: contract with a new goalkeeper
The Florida Panthers have signed a two-year contract with Swiss goaltender Akira Schmid. The contract guarantees Schmid a two million dollar annual salary, making the total value of the deal four million dollars.
Schmid, 26, was traded to Florida from the Vegas Golden Knights at the end of June in exchange for a third-round draft pick. Schmid was a restricted free agent and was heading to arbitration to reach an agreement with the Panthers, but the parties managed to finalize the deal before the hearing.
Last season, Schmid played 34 games in Vegas with a save percentage of 89.3. He has played a total of 82 regular-season games and ten playoff games in his NHL career, representing not only Vegas but also the New Jersey Devils.
Schmid was part of the Swiss Olympic team this year. He also represented his country in the spring 2024 World Championships, where Switzerland won silver.
The Florida goaltending department has undergone a transformation over the summer. Sergei Bobrovsky and Daniil Tarasov left the team, and in addition to Schmid, the Panthers have recruited Jacob Markström.
