The Edmonton Oilers’ megastar Connor McDavid‘s contract extension is the hottest topic in the NHL this late summer.

McDavid commented on Wednesday at a Team Canada event that he is happy to take his time with his contract situation. The comment naturally caused a bit of nervousness among Oilers fans.

McDavid’s current contract, which guarantees a salary of $12.5 million, expires next summer. He will become a free agent without an extension.

Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman believes that McDavid does not want to sign an extension until the Oilers’ chances of success are improved.

– McDavid wants to be sure that the Oilers will continue to be a Stanley Cup contender. Until McDavid signs (the extension), he sees something incomplete in the team, whether it’s an effective young player, a strong enough goalie, or something else, Friedman says.
