Ville Peltosen decision stirs up – the journalist delivered a straightforward message
Genève-Servette HC was eliminated by Fribourg-Gottéron in the Swiss league semifinals with a match score of 1-4. Servette’s head coach Ville Peltonen received harsh criticism after the series.
The Swiss newspaper Blick reporter Stephan Roth criticized Peltonen’s decision to put Robert Mayer in goal for the fifth game of the series. In the playoffs, all previous matches had been started by Stephane Charlin, who, among other things, saved the team in the seventh game of the quarterfinals.
Fribourg scored its opening goal seven minutes in when Lucas Wallmark’s shot easily found the net. The game ultimately ended in a 6-2 victory for Fribourg, as they scored the last two goals into an empty net.
– Anyone who makes tough decisions must be evaluated based on results. And the results look catastrophic – a game score of 2-6 and a series score of 1-4, Roth writes.
Roth considered it a fatal mistake that Peltonen lost confidence in the team’s number one goalie at a crucial moment. Peltonen pulled Charlin from the net in the fourth game and switched to Mayer in the third period.
Peltonen will not continue with Servette next season. He has been rumored to be heading to the head coach position of the NL’s major clubs, SC Bern and EV Zug.
– Servette lost the battle against Fribourg both in goaltending and coaching. This was not good publicity for Peltonen. All interested parties should probably reject his application after this semifinal series, Roth charges.
Peltonen rose to the head coach position of Servette in October when the club fired Yorick Treille.
