The Swiss club Genève-Servette HC has suffered a major setback. Finnish defender Vili Saarijärvi will be out on long-term sick leave.

The club announced on Saturday that Saarijärvi is suffering from an upper body injury that is expected to keep him off the ice for about six weeks. Saarijärvi was injured in a CHL match played this week against the Swedish Växjö Lakers.

Saarijärvi, who won gold with the Lions at the World Championships last spring, has played ten games this season on Servette’s defense. He has recorded stats of 0+7.

With Saarijärvi’s injury, Servette strengthened its depleted defense. The club announced on Sunday that it has signed a two-year contract with the Swedish Adam Boqvist, 26.

Boqvist is moving to Switzerland from the NHL, where he has played a total of 280 games with stats of 27+76=103. Throughout his NHL career, Boqvist has represented the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, and New York Islanders. Last season, he played 28 games for the Islanders with stats of 0+4.

Chicago drafted Boqvist in the first round as the eighth overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.

On Genève-Servette’s injured list, alongside Saarijärvi, are Finnish forwards Markus Granlund and Sakari Manninen. Additionally, Jesse Puljujärvi is out due to a suspension.
