The Lions’ Olympic and World Championship gold forward Hannes Björninen, 31, continues his career in Switzerland.

The SCL Tigers, represented by Björninen, announces that they have signed a two-year extension with the Finnish center, which runs until the spring of 2029.

Björninen is in his second season with the SCL Tigers and has risen to an important role within the team. Last season, he recorded 23 points (10+13) in 40 games. Named alternate captain for this season, Björninen has tallied 9 points (2+7) in 16 games this fall.

The Finnish forward has distinguished himself particularly as a two-way player, on the penalty kill and in the faceoff circle. Björninen has won 56.21 percent of his faceoffs this season. Last season, his faceoff percentage was as high as 60.62.

– Hannes combines skilled play with hard work. He understands the game, takes responsibility, and does important work for the team both with and without the puck. As a versatile two-way center, he is an important player for us in various game situations, praises SCL Tigers’ sports director Pascal Müller in the club’s announcement.

Björninen has won Olympic gold and two World Championships with the Lions. He achieved his most recent World Championship gold in the spring of 2026 at the World Championships held in Switzerland.

Before moving to Switzerland, Björninen played three seasons in Sweden.
