The Olympic hero of the Lions is considering a return to the League – retirement is also an option
The Lions’ long-time trusted goalkeeper Harri Säteri, 36, may make a return to the Liiga next season. The future of the Finnish goalkeeper representing EHC Biel in the Swiss league is currently uncertain.
Säteri’s options currently include continuing his career in Switzerland, returning to Finland, or even retiring from professional play altogether.
Säteri’s current contract with Biel ends after the current season.
– Right now, all options are possible. My contract is ending, and I will make a decision together with my family in the coming weeks, Säteri reveals to Bieler Tagblatt.
Biel has already been assessing the goalkeeper market with an eye on next season. The club has reportedly made a contract offer to HC Ambrì-Piotta’s Swiss goalkeeper Philip Wüthrich.
Säteri has represented Biel since the fall of 2022. The experienced Finn moved to Switzerland from the NHL, where he played a total of 15 games for the Florida Panthers and Arizona Coyotes during his career.
The Lions’ Olympic hero and three-time championship medalist
Säteri is especially remembered for the Lions’ historic Olympic gold in Beijing in 2022.
The experienced goalkeeper became the Lions’ number one goalie in the tournament and was one of the key players of the gold-winning team. Säteri saved with an impressive 96.2 percent success rate in five games during the Olympic tournament.
Säteri’s trophy cabinet also includes the 2022 World Championship and the 2021 World Championship silver.
He has represented the Lions in the men’s World Championships in 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2022. In the 2021 silver tournament, Säteri played in three preliminary round games.
From Tappara to the world in 2011
Säteri’s possible return to the Liiga would also be a spectacular conclusion to a remarkable career. The goalkeeper, born in Toijala, has only represented Tappara during his Liiga career.
Säteri joined Tappara’s senior team in the 2008–09 season and played for the club until the spring of 2011.
After that, his career took him to North America, the KHL in Russia, and finally to Switzerland.
If Säteri decides to continue his career in Finland, it would be his first season in the Liiga in over 15 years.
