Two-time Stanley Cup winner found a new team – career in the NHL ended in controversy
Vjatšeslav “Slava” Voinov, who won two Stanley Cups with the Los Angeles Kings, continues his career in a small KHL team.
The 36-year-old Russian defender will join Amur Khabarovsk for the next season. Voinov played last season for Avangard Omsk, where he appeared in 54 regular season games with a score of 6+5=11.
Voinov’s career in the bright lights of the NHL ended in the fall of 2014 due to a domestic violence incident. The defender did not return to the NHL after that but continued his career in his home country of Russia.
At his best, Voinov was an effective puck-moving defenseman. He scored 34 points in his best NHL season and was an important part of the Kings’ Stanley Cup championship teams in 2012 and 2014.
However, in recent years, the Russian veteran’s production has been on the decline. Voinov still managed to record 11+30=41 points in 59 KHL games during the 2019–20 season. Since then, his point production has been decreasing.
After his NHL career, Voinov has represented SKA Saint Petersburg, Avangard Omsk, Dynamo Moscow, Ak Bars Kazan, and Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the KHL.
In the NHL, Voinov played a total of 190 regular season games. He gained experience in the playoffs with 64 games.
Now, the two-time Stanley Cup winner is trying to gain new momentum for his career in the small town of Khabarovsk.
