The trade saga surrounding Winnipeg Jets’ star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has taken another turn.

According to Sportsnet’s insider reporter Elliotte Friedman, the Carolina Hurricanes have made a new offer for the NHL’s three-time Vezina winner, which differs significantly from the previous one.

Friedman reveals on the 32 Thoughts podcast that Carolina’s new offer no longer includes Russian defenseman Aleksandr Nikišin, who was previously considered a key piece in a potential player trade.

– I have said this before: if Nikišin were moving to Winnipeg, the deal would already be done. However, a couple of people told me on Wednesday that Carolina has a new offer on the table for Hellebuyck, which no longer includes Nikišin. Including him in the trade would just be a waste of time, Friedman said.

According to Friedman, the Hurricanes have changed their approach, but Winnipeg has not yet taken the offer.

– I still find it interesting that Carolina has altered their original offer and is still interested, Friedman continued.

Hellebuyck’s future has been a hot topic ever since the star goaltender requested a trade away from Winnipeg this summer. The goaltender is set to return to the team’s activities today, Friday, after his unpaid suspension unless a trade happens quickly.

In addition to Carolina, at least the Buffalo Sabres and Utah Mammoth are still in the Hellebuyck race, according to Friedman.
