The newly appointed head coach of HIFK, Tommi Miettinen, faces an immediate challenging task. The replacement for Olli Jokinen, who was dismissed, must quickly get the Helsinki team’s game back on track.

The club’s sports director Janne Laukkanen justifies the choice of Miettinen in HIFK’s announcement by citing his experience and expertise. The 50-year-old coach’s contract covers the remainder of the season.

– Miettinen is an experienced head coach in this league. The position is demanding, as change always takes time, and that time decreases with each game. Miettinen’s task is to make the playing style work and to have the team perform at its level. He has the desire and expertise to tackle this challenge.

Laukkanen reminds that changing direction is not solely the responsibility of the new head coach.

– The team also has a responsibility for the overall functioning. We have experienced leaders on the bench as well, and now their roles will be even more emphasized, Laukkanen emphasizes.

Miettinen has seven seasons of experience coaching KalPa’s league team. He served as the head coach of the Kuopio team from 2019 to 2023, after which he led TPS during the 2023–2025 seasons.

At this stage, HIFK has not committed to its new head coach beyond the end of the season. According to Laukkanen, however, a decision had to be made immediately.

– Long-term decisions cannot be made in a short time. This decision had to be made now, and Miettinen is the right man for the job, Laukkanen explains.

Jokinen’s entire coaching staff is leaving the club with the same announcement. Details about Miettinen’s new coaching staff will be announced later.
