The truth was revealed: KHL star was caught doping after the Jokerit game – IIHF has now reacted
Forward Igor Grigorenko, 42, who has had an extensive career in the KHL, has received a four-year suspension from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) for a doping violation.
According to a statement from the IIHF, Grigorenko was tested by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency after the match played on March 12, 2015, between CSKA Moscow and Jokerit.
However, the analysis of Grigorenko’s sample was conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which gained access to the Moscow Anti-Doping Agency’s data through a significant LIMS operation. To date, WADA has identified nearly 300 Russian athletes who have committed doping violations.
Grigorenko’s sample tested positive for six different substances: methenolone, oxandrolone, trenbolone, meldonium, cathine, and pseudoephedrine. All of these substances are on WADA’s list of prohibited substances.
Grigorenko, who ended his professional career in 2018, was asked to provide a defense but chose not to respond to the charges. As a result, he was found to have understood his violation and accepted the penalty. Grigorenko’s suspension began on August 12, 2025.
During his career, Grigorenko played 433 games in the KHL, scoring a total of 134+127=261 points. He won the KHL championship in 2011 while playing for Salavat Yulaev Ufa.
Grigorenko represented the Russian national team in two World Championships and frequently in EHT tournaments. Early in his career, he won the U20 World Championship gold twice.
Grigorenko currently serves as the director of sports for the KHL team HK Sochi.
