NHL faced an unfortunate setback – Patrik Laine would be the right solution right now
Los Angeles Kings will have to start their training camp without Kevin Fiala.
The team announced on Thursday that the Swiss forward has undergone a procedure related to a lower body injury. The Kings did not specify what kind of procedure it was or how long Fiala will be sidelined.
Fiala’s injury dates back to the Milan and Cortina Winter Olympics. The injury forced him to miss the end of last season, and he underwent surgery at that time.
The 30-year-old Fiala managed to play 56 games last season, recording 18+22=40 points. When healthy, he is one of the Kings’ key forwards.
Due to Fiala’s situation, there is now one more spot to fill in the Los Angeles offense at least for the duration of the training camp.
Patrik Laine a potential option
The situation may also open up an opportunity for Patrik Laine.
Los Angeles’ interest in Laine has been discussed previously. NHL reporter David Pagnotta mentioned in May on the Hello Hockey podcast that the Kings were interested in the Finn during the March trade deadline.
Laine is currently an unrestricted free agent.
Last season was very short for the Finn due to injury. Laine played only five games with the Montreal Canadiens and recorded one assist in those games.
The Kings could be a potential destination for Laine if the team wants to bolster its offense during Fiala’s absence. One option could be a tryout contract, through which Los Angeles could assess the Finnish player’s fitness and suitability for the team.
Laine, in turn, would get the chance to showcase his skills to an NHL team and pursue a new contract.
