Veteran of over 700 NHL games ends his playing career – also remembered from Jokers
Experienced Swedish NHL defenseman John Klingberg, 34, has decided to retire from professional hockey. Klingberg quickly found a new job, as he will start working as a hockey expert for Swedish SVT.
During his NHL career, Klingberg played 700 regular season games (92+351=443) and 82 playoff games (9+34=43). The Dallas Stars drafted Klingberg in the 5th round in 2010, and for the majority of his career, Klingberg represented Dallas.
After eight seasons in Dallas, Klingberg’s team changed frequently in recent years. He also represented the Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and San Jose Sharks. In his last season, Klingberg recorded 27 points (10+17) in 56 games with the Sharks.
At his most productive, Klingberg scored 67 points (8+59) in the 2017-18 season with Dallas. He also won the NHL’s defensemen assist leaderboard that year.
Before his NHL career, Klingberg also played in Finland. In the 2011-12 season, he played 20 games with Jokerit, scoring 1+2 points, and six games with Kiekko-Vantaa, with 1+4 points.
In the Swedish national team, Klingberg played in four World Championships. He won two world championships.
