The Swiss championship was decided in a wild way – Lions forward scores.
Fribourg-Gottéron celebrates its first championship in the history of the club in the Swiss league. The team secured the National League title on Thursday evening by defeating Davos, who had dominated the regular season with a 17-point lead, in the seventh game in overtime with a score of 3-2.
Fribourg’s scoring was initiated by the first line center Henrik Borgström on a power play. Borgström recorded 6+6=12 points in 19 playoff games this spring.
Also celebrating the championship in Fribourg’s jersey is Finnish player Juuso Arola, who did not play in the last two finals.
Ultimately, the deciding factor in the match that went into overtime was Swedish star Lucas Wallmark, who capitalized on a penalty taken by his countryman Calle Andersson for delaying the game and scored the goal that brought the championship to the visitors.
The final series between Davos and Fribourg, which extended to a seventh game, was one of the closest in the history of the Swiss league. Four of the encounters went to overtime, and in only one of the series’ games did the goal difference exceed one goal.
Founded in 1937, Fribourg had previously reached the Swiss league finals five times, losing each time. The major club Davos has an impressive 31 championships in its club history.
