The NHL coach did not hold back his words – he criticized his players harshly.
Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Rick Bowness was extremely heated after the last game of the season. Columbus lost the regular season finale to the Washington Capitals 1-2 and missed the playoffs.
Bowness took over as head coach of Columbus in January, replacing Dean Evason. After a weak start to the season, Columbus found a strong rhythm following the coaching change, but the last few weeks have been poor for the team. They won only three of their last 13 games.
Bowness stated in the post-game press conference that he has never experienced such great frustration in his career as he has in the past month. He was breathing heavily before his outburst.
– You just have to look at the stats: three hits, 23 turnovers. I don’t know if I’ll be back here, but if I do, I will change this culture. These guys don’t care. Losing doesn’t bother them. How can they go out there and play like that? It should have been done a month ago, Bowness charged.
– That’s why we’re not in the playoffs. You have to hate losing. I don’t care if it’s a meaningless game, Bowness referred to the game between Columbus and Washington, where it was already clear that Columbus’s season would end with the regular season.
Bowness asked reporters in frustration several times what else they wanted to know. He gave his answers very angrily.
– We talked after the Olympic break about how this would get harder. Everything goes well as long as things go the players’ way. When difficulties arise, the players didn’t want to fight. That’s what happened in the last few weeks. Some of those guys are really lucky that this season is over and there are no practices tomorrow, Bowness said.
Columbus lost its last six home games of the season. Bowness described this as terrible.
– If they’re not embarrassed, they’re on the wrong team.
