The Little Lions on fire at the World Championship ice – this explains the winning streak

The U18 World Championship has started strongly for Finland. The Little Lions have won all three of their group stage matches in Slovakia.

Head coach Tuomo Ropo commented on the start of the tournament on Sunday at the Little Lions’ media event.

– Three wins out of three games is of course a good thing. Particularly positive has been our offensive time and puck possession game, Ropo said.

– However, we are aware that the opponents will get tougher as the tournament progresses, and for example, Canada will present a different challenge. Preparation continues, and the focus is on recovery and game readiness, Ropo added.

Finland still faces a tough match against Canada in the group stage. Canada is the reigning double champion of the youth championships.

– A clearly different, tougher, and more intense game is expected against Canada. There is no acute concern, but we need to be ready.

“Team Spirit, Going All Out, and Living in the Moment”

Ropo emphasizes the team’s unity, which has been built over a long shared journey.

– We emphasize our strengths and working together. There is a strong spirit in the team and a lot of positive energy. The theme of “together against all” is particularly highlighted, and it is also visible in the games and the support from fans. Unity, team spirit, going all out, and living in the moment are big themes for us.

– We emphasize that when we practice or play, it is done with full effort. Otherwise, we are relaxed. During the game, we can quickly return to the themes and act together.

– When we asked the players what sets us apart from other teams, everyone agreed that it is unity. It is not only visible in our play but in everything we do. We have a really good vibe in the group.

Finland secured a 5–4 overtime victory against the host country Slovakia on Saturday in front of a loud home crowd.

– Our big theme in the Slovakia game was “together against the whole arena.” There was quite an atmosphere and the sound of drums, and our locker room sought the victory from there, so the mood was accordingly after the game.

Finland leads the group with eight points. Slovakia and Canada follow behind. The match against Canada will be played tomorrow, Monday, at 3:00 PM Finnish time.
