Huima start – The Little Lions kicked off the NHL prospects’ top tournament
The Finnish under-18 national team opened the Hlinka Gretzky Cup with a victory, defeating Germany in Edmonton by a score of 5–2.
The start of the match was difficult for the Little Lions, as Germany effectively capitalized on their scoring opportunities and took a two-goal lead in the first period.
However, Finland fought back in the second period. Luukas Kokkonen scored to narrow the gap, and soon after, Max Poikela equalized. The score was thus 2–2 heading into the final period.
The decisive moment came as the third period approached its midpoint. Olli Kylmälä carried the puck from his own zone, bypassed two German players along the way, and spectacularly finished into the top right corner for Finland’s winning goal.
Finland extended their lead just over eight minutes before the end when Miska Liljeberg found the net. The final score of 5–2 was sealed by Paavo Fugleberg into an empty net in the dying moments of the match.
Among Finland’s most effective players were KalPa’s Luukas Kokkonen, who scored one goal and assisted another, Ilves’ Max Poikela with stats of 1+1, and Kärppien Lenni Kokkonen, who recorded two assists.
The Hlinka Gretzky Cup, organized since 1991, brings together under-18 national teams and serves as an important showcase for future NHL draft prospects.
This year’s tournament features, in addition to Finland, Canada, the United States, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, and Germany.
Finland’s tournament continues in the night leading into Wednesday, when they will face the United States, who also won their opening match.
